Overview

Simpson Energy is building Australia’s next-generation subsurface capability across natural gas and geological carbon storage (GCS). We pair rigorous geology with an AI-driven reservoir framework to accelerate discovery, de-risk development, and enable safe, durable CO₂ storage at scale. We seek a Head/Senior Geologist with deep Australian basin experience—strong preference for Northern Territory subsurface —to lead geology across exploration, appraisal, development, and CCUS site screening/storage complex characterization.

About Simpson Energy

Simpson Energy is a fast-growing upstream oil and gas exploration company with an expanding portfolio of prospects and a clear strategy to unlock new energy resources. As a wholly owned subsidiary of Geoquest, we combine entrepreneurial agility with long-term strategic capital, positioning ourselves to deliver significant value in today’s evolving energy landscape.

Our mission is to responsibly explore and develop oil and gas assets, leveraging technical excellence, disciplined capital deployment, and strong partnerships.

The Role

You will own the geological strategy and standards across our petroleum and CCUS portfolio, mentor a small high-calibre team and consultants, and be the technical face of Simpson Energy with regulators, landholders, and partners. This is a build-and-lead mandate with real impact on Australia’s energy security and multi-gigaton carbon management.

This role is suited for a seasoned industry leader with a proven track record in upstream oil & gas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set play-to-field geological models and uncertainty frameworks; integrate seismic, petrophysics, wells, fluids/pressure, geomechanics, and dynamic behavior with engineering.
  • Direct prospect maturation, risking, volumetrics, and investment decision gates from exploration through development.
  • Lead planning and execution of remote field programs across Central Australia/NT; supervise mapping, coring, testing, well planning, and data QA/QC.
  • Oversee land access and stakeholder engagement with pastoralists, Traditional Owners, and local communities; coordinate cultural heritage and environmental approvals.
  • Own storage complex screening, injectivity/containment/capacity assessments, seal/fault analysis, and plume migration/conformance.
  • Design MMV strategies aligned to Australian regulation and international best practice; advise on CO₂ well integrity, completions, and abandonment.
  • Establish geological data governance and QA/QC; drive deterministic + probabilistic workflows and uncertainty quantification.
  • Embed AI-assisted interpretation/evaluation to shorten cycle times and improve safety/performance.
  • Lead geological content for statutory submissions; liaise with state and Commonwealth authorities.
  • Manage vendors/consultants; represent Simpson Energy in technical forums and with JV/industry partners.
  • Build and mentor a high-calibre geology team; set technical standards, peer reviews, and training.
  • Translate strategy into clear milestones and decision-ready outputs.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Experience: 15+ years applied geology in Australian basins ; proven NT onshore experience strongly preferred.
  • Technical depth: Seismic interpretation, petrophysics, static modeling with integration to dynamic simulation; fluent in uncertainty/risk methods and reserves/resources workflows.
  • CCUS competence: Demonstrated GCS work (or directly transferable seal/fault/leakage analysis, injection projects, or underground gas storage).
  • Field leadership: Planned and executed remote campaigns safely; comfortable supervising multi-week Central/NT programs.
  • Stakeholders & approvals: Land access, heritage and environmental pathways; effective engagement with pastoralists and Traditional Owners; confident regulator interface.
  • Tools: Kingdom™, Petrel/DecisionSpace, ArcGIS/QGIS; rigorous data QA/QC and data governance mindset.
  • Leadership & communication: Mentor and team-builder; clear communicator with executives, regulators, and communities; drives cross-discipline integration.
  • Work rights & license: Australian citizen or PR with full work rights; current manual driver’s license.

What We Offer

  • The opportunity to shape the future of a dynamic upstream explorer backed by strategic capital.
  • A leadership role in one of the most competitive and high-impact sectors of the Australian and global economy.
  • Competitive remuneration aligned with experience and value creation.
