Primary objective Provide specialist technical advice relating to the regulation of environmental (mining) licences and undertake compliance and enforcement action in relation to mining activities under the Northern Territory Environment Protection Act 2019 (EP Act). Context statement The Mining Division is responsible for administration of the EP Act in relation to mining activities across the NT, from the assessment of licence applications to the regulation of licences and site closure. Functions of the Mining Division include the administrative and technical assessment of licence applications and supporting technical information, licence issue, and related compliance and enforcement activities, including site inspections. Key duties and responsibilities 1. Evaluate reports and data relating to mining activities applying specialist knowledge in water chemistry, waste rock characterisation, hydrology, engineered landform designs and environmental management and monitoring. 2. Provide technical advice, interpretive reports and recommendations of a high professional standard to the Mining Division to assist with and support assessment and regulation consistent with the EP Act. 3. Participate in and contribute to meetings with industry and government providing assessment and regulatory advice. 4. Support the Mining Team Manager in an advisory capacity including maintaining service delivery timeframes. 5. Participate in and undertake other duties as required by the Executive Director Mining, including regulatory compliance and enforcement activities. Selection criteria Essential 1. Tertiary qualifications in a scientific or environmental discipline relevant to mining. 2. Ability to analyse and interpret information from a diverse range of sources, development of solutions and communication of outputs related to the diverse environmental issues encountered by the mining industry in accordance with relevant legislation, best practice manuals, guidelines and standards. 3. Interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team, including with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. 4. Oral and written communication skills suitable for conveying complex technical information in a professional and appropriate manner to assist assessment and regulatory activities; including the ability to interpret relevant legislation. 5. Ability to manage project timelines and keep management informed of progress. 6. Experience in the management and use of spatial data, including operation of related program e.g. GIS. Desirable 1. Current Australian drivers licence (manual gearshift vehicle) or the ability to obtain one within a reasonable timeframe and ability to undertake travel to remote and regional areas of the Northern Territory including potential overnight stays to work for short periods in these areas. 2. Demonstrated experience in compliance and enforcement, including holding Certificate IV in Government Investigations.
