About Mardi Gras

Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras (SGLMG) is one of the longest continuously operating LGBTQIA+ organisations in Australia.

We are a not-for-profit member-based organisation that produces the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade and year-round initiatives that celebrate our LGBTQIA+ identity, creative expression, and elevate diverse voices.

SGLMG was built on the foundations laid by early community activists who fought for LGBTQIA+ rights in a time of wide-spread, institutionalised oppression and discrimination. From these origins, SGLMG has evolved to include a strong focus on celebration while maintaining a commitment to social justice for LGBTQIA+ communities.

About the Role

The Parade Producer is the driving force behind the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade - one of the worlds most iconic LGBTQIA+SB celebrations. This role leads the planning, production and delivery of the Parade, bringing to life a vibrant, world-class event that celebrates pride and community on a global stage

This role manages all facets of Parade production - from administrative, financial, creative, production and technical aspects of the preparation, planning, organisation and execution of the Parade - with a strong focus on cultural integrity, public safety, and stakeholder relationships. The Parade Producer also engages with key stakeholders, arts and cultural organisations, and government agencies to foster collaboration and uphold the Parades civic and cultural significance

Workplace and public safety are a key accountability of the Parade Producer due to the scale of the events.

Key role objectives and accountabilities

This position is required to occasionally work outside of core hours and over weekends during the operational period of the festival. 

Key Requirements

  • Deliver world class events across a multi-platform and multi-genre event strategies

  • Build and maintain key stakeholder relationships including LGBQTIA+SB communities, parade participants and organisations, government agencies, venues and partners

  • Uphold and promote the organisation core values and ethics charter in all aspects of the role

  • Develop and manage budgets, ensuring minimal variance between forecast and actual expenditure

  • Provide timely and relevant input into the festivals marketing plan and maintain a clear understanding of its objectives

  • Monitor and model event-related revenue to support financial sustainability

  • Identify and generate new revenue streams, including associated budgeting and financial modelling

Essential

  • 5+ years or more as a Producer or Senior Event Manager or large-scale public events

  • Demonstrate project management skills and experience

  • Significant experience in all aspect of large-scale event production including technical, interpreting technical drawings, producing event manuals, developing and reviewing risk documents, crew and staff management

  • Work Health & Safety knowledge including the WH&S Act and relevant legislation.

  • Experience with events involving road closures, traffic and transport management

  • Experience in crowd management for outdoor, large-scale events 

  • Previous experience working with the LGBTQIA+SB and/or First Nations communities.  

  • Confident in presenting and public speaking

  • Advanced skills in using Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint. 

Desirable:  

  • Appropriate tertiary education in Event Management or similar field.  

  • Training in Work Health & Safety

  • Major public event experience and experience in crowd management for outdoor, large-scale events of 200,000 people or more

  • Experience working in a broadcast environment or collaborating with broadcast partners

  • Experience using Vectorworks computer aided design software.
