Position Information

Mortlake Public School is a vibrant and inclusive school located in Sydneys Inner West, with an enrolment of approximately 267 students. The school is committed to providing high-quality, evidence-informed teaching and learning experiences in a safe, supportive, and engaging environment. Mortlake PS has a strong focus on explicit teaching, data-informed practice, and fostering high expectations for all students, including those identified as High Potential and Gifted (HPG). As part of the School Excellence Plan, priorities include enhancing student growth and attainment in literacy and numeracy through consistent, high-impact instructional practices, strengthening wellbeing for learning, and deepening community connections. The school promotes a culture of high expectations, inclusivity, and collaborative practice, underpinned by positive behaviour for learning (PBL) and school-wide wellbeing initiatives. The Assistant Principal position is a key leadership role that supports whole-school improvement, instructional leadership, staff capacity building, and the development of high-functioning collaborative teams. The successful applicant will demonstrate a strong commitment to instructional leadership, explicit teaching, differentiated practice, and classroom management while actively fostering partnerships with students, staff, families, and the broader school community.

Selection Criteria

In addition to the general selection criteria, approval to teach infants and/or primary:

  • Demonstrated ability to lead evidence-informed, differentiated teaching strategies that emphasise explicit instruction and are guided by assessment and data analysis to improve student outcomes. 
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead school improvement initiatives aligned with the School Excellence Plan (SEP), with experience in using system-negotiated targets, milestones and rigorous evaluative practices to inform decision-making and measure impact. 
  • Proven capacity to foster a culture of high expectations to enhance partnerships within the school and the broader community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to enhancing and maintaining initiatives and processes that support comprehensive school wellbeing programs, with a strong focus on implementing effective classroom practices that promote a positive and inclusive school culture. 
General Selection Criteria

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice

2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs

3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams

4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents

5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning

6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Departments Aboriginal education policy

Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
